Guelph-Humber Snap Photo Contest: We have a winner!

Do you remember your reaction when you received your offer of admission to the University of Guelph-Humber? Jaime Vieira does -- and she has the photos to prove it!

Jaime, who joins the Kinesiology program this fall, is the winner of the Guelph-Humber Snap Photo Contest, which invited incoming students to share their “reaction shots” when they received their offer of admission. Jaime’s winning entry, which won her a $500 back-to-school shopping spree, had it all: the anticipation, the offer, and the celebration!

Jaime took some time from her summer vacation to answer a few questions about the application process, her winning entry, and why the University of Guelph-Humber was her first choice:

Guelph-Humber: When did you apply to Guelph-Humber? How would you describe the experience of applying for post-secondary school in general and Guelph-Humber in particular?

Jaime Vieira: I applied to Guelph Humber as my number one choice very early in the application process. Applying to post-secondary schools was a little intimidating and final, especially because once you pick the school you want you still need to wait for the institution to pick you. That was scary for me because I knew from the beginning that Guelph-Humber was the perfect school for me; it was just waiting for the acceptance letter, whether or not it would come, that was the hardest part.

While I was deciding what school to pick I went to all the open house opportunities each school offered. This is when I was really able to see the environment and the details of the programs first hand. Going to both Guelph-Humber's Open House and Program Preview Day really allowed me to see the benefits of a small program and of receiving both a university and college education.

GH: Your entry clearly shows how excited you were to find the offer in the mail; could you tell us more about how it felt to receive the offer of admission?

JV: I was extremely excited to find my offer of acceptance in the mail! Each day I would walk home from school with a large smile on my face at the possibility of a package from Guelph-Humber waiting for me. The package actually came for me the day my brother was going back home to British Columbia. It was really special to me to have my whole family home when I got the news! Although I was upset my brother was leaving it was hard to wipe the smile of my face -- the package I had been waiting for, for months, had finally come.

GH: What inspired you to design your submission the way you did? The four-photo setup really helped bring your enthusiasm to life. (The Guelph-Humber red didn't hurt, either!)

JV: I knew the picture had to be amazing, especially since Guelph-Humber has such a good Media Studies program. I used an app on my phone which allowed me to have the four pictures and the Guelph-Humber red border. So with four pictures to display I knew I wanted to share a story instead of random shots. So I showed myself walking to the mailbox and finding my acceptance letter. I also wanted to incorporate all the Guelph-Humber swag I could! So I had my Guelph-Humber sweater on (even though it was 27 degrees outside!); I also had my lanyard and pen hanging out of my shorts pockets.

GH: It looks like you’re ready to go! What are you most looking forward to when you arrive at the campus this fall?

JV: I think I'm most excited for two things: I'm looking forward to Orientation, so I can meet new people, and I'm also extremely excited about my Kinesiology-specific classes. I'm looking forward to taking classes that interest me instead of the mandatory classes that I might not enjoy as much!
