Media Studies alum readies for busy new year

Jackie Redmond better rest up over the holidays because next year’s going to be busy for the 2010 Media Studies grad.

As the winner of Gillette Drafted 3, Redmond now has two jobs.

She’s already started work as a host on theScore, which co-presented Drafted with Gillette. Redmond will work as a Gillette spokesperson. The brand, she said, “basically pioneered sports marketing.”

Understanding sports in business and cultural terms has helped Redmond pursue her “dream job.”

For the final challenge in Drafted the judges assigned the budding sportscaster, whose first love is hockey, to cover a Manchester United and Chicago Fire friendly in the Windy City.

“I was really excited because [Man U] is one of the biggest sports franchises in the world,” Redmond recalled. “I actually saw it as a chance to challenge myself and also prove that I could report on more than just hockey.”

In her winning segment, Redmond reported on the practicalities of trying “to get access to one of the most storied teams in soccer,” while exploring fandom in Chicago and Manchester using her own field interviews and file footage.

“I would tell anyone that wants to get into broadcasting to work hard and go for it,” advised Redmond. “I wasn’t focused on the fact that [Drafted] was a reality show. For me, it was a chance to showcase my talents in the hopes of landing my dream job and, at the end of the day, that’s an opportunity I would never pass up.”
