New Agora Fellows named for 2017-18

Over two successful years running at the University of Guelph-Humber, the Agora Fellowship has gathered intellectually curious UofGH students for philosophical readings, group discussions and illuminating field trips.

Now in its third year, the program led by Assistant Vice-Provost and Program Head of Business Dr. George Bragues has announced its latest group of eight students serving as Agora Fellows for the 2017-18 academic year:

Alexander Corfield (Justice Studies)

Hannah Derue (Psychology)

Megan Hutchison (Media Studies)

Genevieve Jung (Justice Studies)

Ameerah McLean (Psychology)

Cristina Morrone (Business)

Catia Ribeiro (Media Studies)

The students, who already met for the first time, will gather for seven more meetings this semester on the topic of “God and Politics.” Questions include: How should the government treat religion?; How should the diversity of religious traditions affect laws and policies?; and How much freedom should people be given to express their religious beliefs?

Readings this year will include John Locke’s A Letter Concerning Toleration and excerpts from Dante’s On Monarchy and James Fitzjames Stephen’s Equality, Liberty, Fraternity.

The Fellows will also take an all-expenses paid field trip to a location relevant to this year’s discussions.

“God and Politics has been a topic that has been part of our zeitgeist for well over a decade now,” Dr. Bragues said. “I was sure students would have something to say about it.”
