RCMP come to campus for Career Expo

The University of Guelph-Humber was host last weekend to dozens of students and community members for the third annual RCMP Career Expo. The Expo, which brought a number of the national police force to campus, introduced attendees to the work of an RCMP officer and offered a glimpse of their training academy in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Glenn Hanna, assistant program head of Justice Studies at UofGH, had a 32-year career with the RCMP, and spoke to that experience at the career expo alongside an RCMP superintendent and other officers.

“There are a lot of students at UofGH who are interested in law, and this was an opportunity to meet and talk with one of the most significant jobs in law: policing,” he says. “It’s a field that includes many potential careers, not just serving as a uniformed officer.”

Contrary to the popular image of the Mountie, Prof. Hanna says that working for the RCMP is marked by its variety, something he knows better than most. After his training in Saskatchewan, Prof. Hanna’s career saw him stationed across British Columbia, in the Canadian Arctic and eventually investigating organized crime in Toronto.

“You can work from coast to coast to coast, doing work at the municipal, provincial, territorial and federal level. That’s why at the Career Expo we had representatives from their units in commercial crime, canine handling, explosives and their marine section, to name just a few,” he says. “We wanted to show all the possibilities that a career on justice can bring.”
