The top 6 in the 6ix

Toronto's skyline at dusk

When you’re deciding what university to go to, you’ve got to think about the classes, the campus, and the clubs, but another thing you need to keep in mind is the city.

At the University of Guelph-Humber, you’re going to get top-notch classes and a campus that’s full of spots to study, eat and hang out, but you’re also going to be in Canada’s biggest city: Toronto.

If you’re looking to get around to concerts, cultural events, or career opportunities, Toronto’s got you covered. Here are the top six benefits to living in The 6ix.

1. The country’s biggest transit system
With an interconnected system of subways, streetcars and buses, Toronto has Canada’s largest transit system. Because many of those buses find their way right to the University of Guelph-Humber, it’s easy to get by without a car. As a student, you’re even entitled to a discounted Metropass. If you’re driving to campus, you can buy your parking pass online — they’re good for the whole semester.

2. Cultural events both big and small
If you’re looking to turn out for the big name act at a packed arena or catch that up-and-coming band before they hit their big break, you’ll find it in Toronto. Because people move to the city from around the world — a whopping 50% of city residents were born outside of Canada — you’ll also find events for just about every culture there is. If you’re more interested in the big game than the big show, Toronto has six major sports teams playing hockey, baseball, basketball, football, soccer and lacrosse. So, paint your face and get ready to cheer.

3. Access to field placements
If you’re studying at the University of Guelph-Humber, your time in class is going to be paired with hands-on experience. Living in a city of over 2.5 million means the opportunities for your placements are almost limitless.

4. Research opportunities
At UofGH, the teaching and learning of our students is deeply important to us, so when a faculty member receives a University Research Grant, they hire students as research assistants. This means you’ll get to work and learn alongside professors, build your network beyond the University and possibly present at one of Toronto’s many research conferences.

5. Our faculty are a big deal
Many of our faculty members don’t just teach their subjects, they live them. Whether it’s broadcasters in Media Studies, exercise physiologists in Kinesiology, or social workers in Family and Community Social Services, UofGH instructors know the ins and outs of the local industries and they’re excited to teach you about it.

6. Network with future employers
From mom and pop shops to worldwide enterprises, Toronto is home to thousands of potential employers and campus plays host to regular networking and job fairs. By studying at UofGH, you’ll get an innovative education that sets you apart on the job market, and Career Services can help you write a resume, network with employers, and nail an interview.

When you study at UofGH, you stand out.
