More than 3,600 University of Guelph-Humber students, faculty and guests recently gathered at the Pearson Convention Centre to celebrate the Class of 2017’s Convocation.

Keynote guest speakers at the event included former CFL linebacker Jonathan Hood, who runs the Ahead of the Game youth mentorship program at UofGH, as well as Dr. Ron Stansfield, who was the recipient of the 2017 University of Guelph-Humber Faculty/Staff Mentoring Award, and Business instructor Tom McKaig.

On a beautiful spring day, students cheered on this year’s winners of the Vice-Provost Award, given to the students with the highest cumulative average in each program, including: Leanne Mason (Business), Victoria DiGiovanni (Early Childhood Studies), Veronica Odita (Family and Community Social Services), Julian Vitale (Kinesiology), Victoria Baker (Media Studies), Christopher Barron (Psychology), Gerald Foster (Justice Studies BAA) and Ovais Ahmad (Justice Studies).

Two supportive families of UofGH students were also honoured with the Family of the Year Award. This year’s recipients were: Amaleswaran and Gnanasuganthy Amaleswaran, whose daughter Alveina Amaleswaran graduated from Early Childhood Studies; and Ali and Fatemeh Padashi, parents to Justice Studies graduate Mani Padashi.

“I extend my sincerest congratulations to each of our 2017 graduates and their families,” said Dr. John Walsh, Vice-Provost of the University of Guelph-Humber. “With their degree, diploma and extensive work placement experience in hand, our students leave the university very well equipped to enter their profession, or go on to pursue further studies.”
