Welcome to the 16^th Annual Last Lecture

Welcome to the 16^th Annual Last Lecture celebration. This evening is all about celebrating you, your successes, achievements, and remembering your journey from first year to now.

Land Acknowledgement

Let’s begin by acknowledging the Indigenous peoples of the lands on which the University of Guelph-Humber is situated.

The University of Guelph-Humber is located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Alders” in Michi Saagiig language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all.

The Last Lecture provides us with an opportunity to trace our steps and reflect on our experiences during our time in this space of learning. It is important that we also take the time to learn of the Indigenous peoples who came before us. As settlers, we must all be committed to furthering our understanding of the past and the present so that we may each, in our own ways, move forward in a spirit of reconciliation.

We are all visitors to this land. As we gather now on this virtual platform, you are encouraged to learn more about the land and the history of the Indigenous peoples here and wherever you may reside.

Megan Roopnarine

This annual award has been established to honour Michael Nightingale, who served as the first Vice Provost and Chief Academic Officer at the University of Guelph-Humber from 2001 to 2005. Throughout his tenure, Michael’s vision and dedication were critical in shaping both the academic and co-curricular environments at the University of Guelph-Humber. This award is presented to a graduating student who has made significant contributions to the University of Guelph-Humber community, beyond their own program of study, and shares Michael Nightingale’s commitment to enriching the student experience at the University. The award consists of a certificate of honour, a permanent plaque displayed in the University of Guelph-Humber building, and a cash prize of $1,000.

Outstanding Mentorship Award

Recipient: Caroline Fabbruzzo

Caroline Fabbruzzo

The Outstanding Mentorship Award was established as a way for graduating students to recognize a staff or faculty member for their outstanding guidance or support during their time as a University of Guelph-Humber student. Nominations are based on the impact this individual has had on the overall experience of a University of Guelph-Humber student. The recipient of this award will have provided significant, positive mentoring, guidance and encouragement in support of students. Caroline Fabbruzzo is a faculty member of the Early Childhood Studies Program. Nominees have noted Caroline’s ability to facilitate a compassionate and positive learning environment for students, along with her continuous support for her student’s success.
