“The picture is clear.  We know that a fraction of those in need of mental health care receive it.  We’re also seeing significant growth in applied areas– where psychological principles are being used in entirely new realms.  Amidst debate, the question remains:  How can we maintain accountability while responding to the needs of people?  Innovation in mental health care begins with innovation in education.”

In just the last few years, we’ve seen great diversification in the field of psychology.  While technology propels experimental research, we’re seeing new applied areas emerge at the other end of the spectrum.  Health psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, evolutionary, sport and forensic psychology – this is a remarkable time for those interested in understanding our thoughts, feelings, and behaviour.

So how do you prepare to work in this discipline?  You learn the most pertinent information while gaining skills relevant to the field. Psychology at UofGH is about integrating academic and applied learning – an innovative approach to a psychology education.

You learn about the physiology of the brain, about neurological processes – but then apply what you know as you learn about persuasion and facilitation.  See how psychology is being used in various fields.  Have the opportunity to gain work experience.  Work as a research assistant as you learn to design, conduct and analyze research.  Travel abroad to better understand disparities in mental health outcomes.  The collective experience is like no other.

Whether you choose to work in community mental health, in schools, universities, hospitals, correctional centres or private companies, a balanced education means you’ll have the most relevant knowledge base and experiences to get you there.

What credentials will I graduate with?

Earn BOTH an Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Psychology AND a General Arts & Science Diploma.

You gain both theoretical knowledge and applied skills – that’s why you graduate with two credentials.  Both an honours degree from the University of Guelph, and a diploma from the Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning – two of Canada’s leading postsecondary institutions.  All in four years of full-time study.

It’s the most relevant postsecondary psychology education we can offer.  We innovatively combine theoretical and applied learning so that you are better prepared for whatever you may choose to do – whether that means competing for graduate school or entering the competitive workforce immediately after graduation.
