In this course, students will explore the Nature vs. Nurture debate by visiting Quito and Otavalo where influences from indigenous, Spanish colonial, and other, cultures have variably affected day-to-day life (i.e., architecture, activities, religious practices, cuisine, etc.). Students will also trace some of the footsteps of Charles Darwin as we visit San Cristobal to observe principles of evolutionary theory that have contributed to the diverse wildlife on the island. Taken together, evolutionary and cultural influences are said to influence human psychology, and we will examine the relative contributions of evolution and culture on human functioning. This involves assigned readings, group discussions, and lectures by professors in Ecuador to acquire an understanding of the Nature vs. Nurture debate.
