India: Globalization, Technology and the Re-Imagination of India

This course encompasses a study tour that explores how globalization and technology are transforming the culture and everyday life of India. It also examines how the West has imagined India from the past to the present. No city best represents this ongoing re-imagination than Bangalore, India’s “Silicon Valley.” We will explore the growth of Bangalore over the last few centuries, from princely rulers and British colonialism to post-independence India. Also examined will be the impact of various government economic development initiatives, the role of multinational corporations, and the embrace of globalization and new technologies. We will also visit the smaller city of Mysore, known for its palaces and rich cultural traditions.
