Japan: Soka Education and the Pursuit of Happiness

Soka education is a humanistic self-empowering life philosophy that promotes the idea that individual happiness and global harmony can be attained through actions to create value in one's own life and in the lives of others. Soka, originating in Japan, is aligned with Nichiren Buddhist principles and practice, and holds as its core belief that everyone has an inner potential that, when activated, is both the cause and effect of their own ultimate happiness. This course will explore Japanese culture and the philosophy of Soka education as it applies to oneself and one's interactions with others. The study tour includes visits to Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kamakura, as well as participation in classes at Soka University and Soka High School.
