Recognized for his academic excellence, University of Guelph-Humber (U of GH) Kinesiology graduate Anthony Moncada is a recipient of a prestigious award from the Canadian government: the Governor General’s Academic Medal.

As an undergraduate student, he received the silver medal because he achieved the highest Grade Point Average at U of GH – just under 98 per cent. The University is a participant of the Governor General program, and silver medals are awarded to students at the undergraduate level.

Being the recipient of the Academic Medal came as an unexpected but deeply gratifying surprise to Moncada. He was on his way home from working in a lab at Toronto Rehab when he saw the email informing him of the recognition.

“It's not every day that you get recognized for a job you do or effort you put into something. So, it's nice to be recognized like that, especially when it's coming from the governor general,” Moncada said, who was given the award at his convocation ceremony.

When asked about how he achieved such an academic feat, Moncada emphasized the importance of consistent effort and not cutting corners, saying that you get what you put into your studies.

“If you're just willing to work hard and put the time in, you could literally do whatever you want,” he reflected.

This fall, Moncada will enter a Master of Science program in Anatomy and Cell Biology at Western University, with a goal to one day become an anatomy professor.

Moncada also received a Vice-Provost award for receiving the highest GPA in the Kinesiology program at Guelph-Humber.

“Inside and outside the classroom, Anthony has contributed significantly to the Guelph-Humber community. Through his dedication, hard work, excellent time management skills, and academic success, he’s deserving of such a monumental recognition,” Chair, Kinesiology, Dr. Leslie Auger said. “Congratulations!”
