Dr. Shane Young is a Registered Social Worker (Ontario), multidisciplinary researcher, educator, and activist-scholar. He serves as an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work and the Academic Coordinator for the Indigenous Knowledge and Experiences Certificate at Toronto Metropolitan University.
His research centers on critical Indigenous studies, urban Indigenous identities, colonialism and decolonization theories, and Indigenous research methodologies. Shane’s doctoral research examined how digital spaces, including social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, shape Indigenous identity formation, relationality, and resurgence. His current scholarship extends this work by exploring Indigenous digital mentorship, cultural continuity, intergenerational connection, and community-based practices of belonging, resilience, and resurgence in online environments.
Drawing on a strong background in social work practice, Shane has worked across educational and community settings with individuals and communities navigating systemic marginalization. His professional experience includes work in Deaf culture, homelessness, mental health and addictions, child welfare, and Indigenous community contexts. Across his teaching, research, and community engagement, he is committed to Indigenous-centered, relational, and decolonizing approaches to learning, practice, and knowledge production.
Shane has ancestral ties to both Mi’kmaw and Newfoundland settler communities. Originally from the southwestern coast of Newfoundland, he has called Tkaronto home since 2006.
