What You Need to Know: Letter of Permission (LOP)
A letter of permission is required if a University of Guelph‐Humber student wishes to enroll in a course at another institution and have the course considered as a credit toward their University of Guelph‐Humber degree/diploma.
Course request must be a degree level course from an accredited postsecondary institution.
Complete the Letter of Permission request form online.
A $70 non-refundable processing fee will automatically be applied to your student account on WebAdvisor and will be due by the tuition deadline for the given semester. This fee will be charged to your account even if the request is denied or if the course is later dropped or the student never registers with the host institution.
A student seeking a letter of permission must demonstrate the following:
- The course(s) for which credit is being sought is equivalent to a specific course within their program. Students are encouraged to get as much information as possible regarding the course they are requesting credit for. A detailed course syllabus should be submitted along with the LOP form.
- There are strong academic grounds for pursuing the course at another institution.
- The course and program objectives of the University of Guelph‐Humber program in which the student is enrolled will be met by the course(s) for which the credit is being sought.
Once the LOP is approved, you must complete it in one of two ways:
- If you drop the course or do not register, you must arrange for the host institution to send us a letter stating you withdrew in good standing.
- Upon completion of the course, arrange for the host institution to send your official transcript directly to your Academic Advisor.
If the transcript for the course is not received before the 20th class day of the semester following the completion of the course, a grade of “F” will be entered on your transcript. Graduating students: LOP transcripts will need to be received by your Academic Advisor no later than the 10th class day of the following semester (e.g. Winter LOP course to graduate in June or Summer LOP course to graduate in the fall). LOP transcripts received after the 8th class day may delay the production of your graduation parchments.
Things to keep in mind
- It is your responsibility to register for the course at the host institution and pay the appropriate fees. Courses may fill up quickly and an approval for an LOP does not guarantee enrolment in the particular course.
- Students are required to complete the courses specified on the Letter of Permission during the semester stated on the form.
- All courses attained on an approved Letter of Permission will be included in internal academic records as either a credit, ‘CRD’, or fail, ‘F’. Your grade will not appear on internal records and will not count in the semester average or the overall academic average and will not be used to determine your status under the continuation of study regulations.
