The University of Guelph-Humber (U of GH) is unveiling the Global Scholars Fellowship, a signature academic initiative that brings together experiential learning, mentorship, and small-group dialogue.

Full-time U of GH students in their first or second year can now apply until Jan. 31, 2026. The eight students selected for the Fellowship will hold reserved places in two credit-bearing courses (no prerequisites required): the Chair's Seminar in Fall 2026 and an International Field Study course in Summer 2027.

“In a labour market shaped by rapid change, research increasingly highlights the value of foundational capacities such as communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and adaptability. The Fellowship is designed to develop those capacities through rigorous academic practice,” Liberal Studies Chair Dr. Vasilis (Bill) Molos said, who will serve as the Fellowship’s academic lead.

Dr. Molos’ goal is to foster a setting where students can sharpen their academic voices. Through the seminar, participants will have access to an intimate forum to speak, listen, and share ideas. Positive outcomes will include:

  • Creating a close and engaging academic environment through the Chair’s Seminar, where critical writing development will be honed with regular guidance, student-led discussion will take place, and a major research paper will be submitted
  • Connecting classroom learning to the outside world through the International Field Study, which Dr. Molos believes is “more than travel” – it’s a life experience that includes guided learning on-location with structured analysis and writing afterward
  • Ongoing mentorship with some of the brilliant minds at U of GH, including at least one individualized meeting per semester

“When students have a real relationship with a faculty member who knows their work, the benefits often show up quickly. They are more likely to ask for help early, to take intellectual risks, and to keep going when a course pushes them. Over time, that translates into stronger work and clearer direction,” he explained.

To apply, students are required to submit an unofficial transcript, a reference contact, and brief written responses about their academic interests and what they hope to gain out of this experience. Overall, the Global Scholars Fellowship is seeking students who demonstrate curiosity, strong academic habits, and a willingness to do serious work in a small cohort.

“This Fellowship reflects what I believe undergraduate education should do at its best,” Dr. Molos said. “It should invite students into rigorous conversation, insist on careful writing and thinking, and then give them a chance to test ideas in the world with guidance and reflection.”
