Initiating a Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS)

Students in Early Childhood and Family and Community Social Services MUST apply for a “Vulnerable Sector Screening” in advance of placement. Most checks are valid for one year, although some places may require a valid check within the last six months. Check with your Career & Placement Coordinator for specific timelines.

Failure to apply for this screen will mean that you will not be able to participate in field placement. Students in Justice Studies and Psychology may also need a valid Vulnerable Sector Screen for some placement sites and should consult with Career & Placement Services.

Important Information for Applying

** Make sure to indicate you’re a student when you complete the forms. Fees may vary, depending on where you apply.

If you live in TORONTO, please connect with your Field Placement Coordinator to request an electronic VSS application form.

You may mail the completed application with a $20.00 money order/certified cheque to:

Toronto Police Services (Headquarters)
40 College Street
Toronto, Ontario
M5G 2B3

*Please note, personal cheques are not accepted.

You may submit the application with payment, in person, to the Toronto Police Services Headquarters. A VSS drop box is located in the front lobby.

Students can apply in-person at the following regional police departments:

  • Halton
  • Peel
  • York
  • Durham
  • Simcoe

It’s important to note that as part of the application process you MAY be required to provide a letter from the university to confirm a VSS is required for placement. Please connect with your Field Placement Coordinator directly to request a signed letter.

Vulnerable sector screens outside of Metro Toronto can take anywhere from a few weeks or more to be returned.

If you live in Toronto, the wait time for a returned Vulnerable Sector Screening is upwards of 15 weeks. Please ensure that you apply within the time frame recommended by your Career & Placement Coordinator to prevent any delay in beginning your placement.
