Get Ready for Your Placement or Internship

We build hands-on work experience into every program at University of Guelph-Humber. We do this through placements and internships that let you apply the skills you learn in the classroom, test drive roles and industries before you graduate, and meet key players in your field.

Some placements and internships begin as early as your first year, depending on your program. Here are some key placement and internship requirements to help you get ready.

Placement due dates
Program Placement Semester Due Dates
Early Childhood Semester 2 (Winter Semester of 1st year)
  • Apply for a Criminal Reference Check (CRC) with Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS) no earlier than August (IMPORTANT: Most Early Learning settings require a VSS that has a 6-month validity for the winter semester placement start date).

  • Complete Immunization package. Connect with the Student Wellness & Accessibility Centre to set up a virtual appointment to have your package reviewed. Once approved you will receive your Immunization Clearance Card.

  • Complete your Standard First Aid (AED)/CPR Level C certification.

  • All documents must be uploaded to GHworks for approval by the due date given by your Field Placement Coordinator.

Community Social Services Semester 4 (Winter Semester of 2nd year)
  • Apply for a Criminal Reference Check (CRC) with Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS) during the last week of May to ensure your CRC/VSS is valid for the entire academic year. You must submit your processed CRC and VSS to ghworks by the second week of August.

  • Complete all vaccinations required by the placement setting (students can decline such vaccinations, however, this may make them ineligible for placements that require certain vaccinations by law).

  • All documents must be ready by the second week of August.

Justice Studies Semester 4 (Winter Semester of 2nd year)
  • You may need to complete a Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS) for some placements. Speak to your Career & Placement Coordinator at the start of Semester 3.
  • Make sure the VSS is completed (if you need it) before the start of your placement. Allow at least 15 weeks from the time you apply.
Psychology Semester 6 (Winter Semester of 3rd year)
  • You may need to complete a Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS) for some placements. Speak to your Career & Placement Coordinator at the start of Semester 3.

  • Make sure the VSS is completed (if you need it) before the start of your placement. Allow 4-6 weeks from the time you apply.

Transfer students

Contact Career & Placement Services to verify the deadlines based on your program year.

Give yourself enough time

Reach out to Career & Placement Services a full semester before your placement begins. You may need to get additional vaccinations or tests (e.g., Hepatitis A and B, TB) for certain placements.

Apply early for a Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS)

If your placement involves vulnerable groups, like children, the elderly or people with disabilities, you may need to complete a Vulnerable Sector Screening

Allow at least 12 - 15 weeks from the time you apply. If a VSS is required for your placement or internship, you cannot start until the VSS is completed. If you apply late, you may not be able to complete the required number of hours for your internship or placement.
