New York & Los Angeles: Magazines and Movies - The Making and the Magic

In this course, students will go behind the scenes at some of the world’s most prolific and popular consumer media creators. In New York, students will visit some of the largest magazine publishers in the world. In Hollywood, students will tour studios of major filmmakers. We will explore how the magazine and film industries have evolved, looking particularly at the impact of digital technology. Students will also visit iconic sites in New York and Los Angeles, as well as universities/colleges that are leading the way in media education.  For the final project, students will have the option of producing a long-form journalism magazine story or a 20- to 30-minute video documentary. The course instructors will provide support to students completing these assignments.
