The top achievements in Canadian student media were recently celebrated at the 2018 Emerge Media Awards, the annual showcase presented by the University of Guelph-Humber that honours the best work produced by journalism, media studies and communications students across Canada.

Competitors travelled from across the country for the elegant gala at the Assembly Hall in Toronto, with nominees selected from 252 total submissions from universities and colleges across Canada. Winners were chosen by an independent panel of 39 esteemed industry representatives, including editors, broadcasters, producers and other media professionals.

Administered by students and faculty in UofGH’s Media Studies program, Emerge is now in its fourth year. The gala recognizes the best writing, editing, videography, audio, digital design, communications and public relations performed at a post-secondary level.

“It’s such a thrill to see student media storytelling celebrated and recognized. Truly world class,” said Jerry Chomyn, Program Head of Media Studies at the University of Guelph-Humber.

“Congratulations to the finalists representing universities and colleges across Canada. This truly has become a national event and I’m so proud of Guelph-Humber’s media students, led by Assistant Program Head Kathy Ullyott, for organizing the evening.”
