“Science Rendezvous is an exciting and collaborative event that I am so happy to be a part of. I have a passion for volunteering and getting involved in school related activities!” says Aneesa Abdullahi, a third year Kinesiology Program student at the University of Guelph-Humber (UofGH) and first time Science Rendezvous volunteer.

This event caught Aneesa’s attention because it is co-curricular record (CCR) certified and incorporates her favourite subject, science! The event helps Aneesa expand and add to her extra-curricular experiences to improve her collaboration skills, network, and learn in an environment outside of her daily studies. Aneesa plans on using her CCR to add to her resume for future jobs, internships, post-graduate applications, and scholarships.

Aneesa’s team was assigned the task of preparing a presentation on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. It is a very relevant and significant topic as the world has relied on their use during the COVID-19 pandemic. PCR tests are the gold standard for identifying infectious diseases, such as COVID-19 and its accuracy helps prevent the spread of this disease. This presentation covers an abundance of information on PCR testing and Aneesa’s personal favourite, a virtual lab! This computer programmed lab takes the audience into a new reality. The lab has a robot that guides the presenters and the audience through the steps of PCR testing. It is an informative and fun way of teaching the viewers rather than just talking through the steps.

Additionally, Aneesa’s team created a ‘Kahoot’ to further engage the viewers, help test their memory, and create an interactive virtual experience. Aneesa’s role for this presentation was to explain the difference between a PCR test and a rapid antigen test. She had to collect information, create slides, and communicate with her team.

“This is the first time I have taken part in this event, and I’ve had such a great experience. The topic my team and I were assigned was interesting, we had huge support and assistance from our instructor, Dr. Laelie Snook and we all worked together well”. Dr. Snook teaches in the Kinesiology Program.

Aneesa said that she learnt a lot of new things about herself throughout this process, developed a greater joy for volunteering, and now knows a lot more about PCR testing than when she first started. Aneesa hopes to take part of this amazing event next year to learn more about science-related topics and build more on her volunteer experiences.
