Meet Prince K.

Graduated 2015

“Guelph-Humber is a school of opportunity, which has transformed my life completely. The smaller and more intimate community of students and teachers makes you feel included and recognizable. You can stand out from the crowd by taking leadership roles and can create a large impact in your short time here. As a professor now at the university, I find it very rewarding to give back and educate students that are starting and building their careers. Make your education count by choosing Guelph-Humber and the plethora of opportunities it can provide you as a student.”

Where is Prince now?

Prince is a Small Business Consultant with the Halton Region Economic Development Office and a Professor at the University of Guelph-Humber.

As a Small Business Consultant, he supports small businesses with sales, marketing, market research, operations and finances, as well as providing help with the municipal registration process and license approvals.

“I love witnessing entrepreneurs' [reaction] when they see that their business is starting to succeed. When they come back and thank me for my help, it's one of the most rewarding things I've ever felt.”

As a professor at UofGH, Prince is also utilizing his mentorship skills and small business acumen. He teaches Entrepreneurial Studies and loves bringing in small business owners he knows to speak to his students about what it takes to succeed as a business today.

“I've always had a passion for teaching. When I speak to the students, I'm not just teaching, but also mentoring. I really enjoy doing what I do!"

Clubs/Societies

Extracurriculars played a significant role in Prince's skill development. His experience included:

“The program along with all the extracurricular activities really set the foundation for where I am in terms of my career.”

Advisor support

Prince came to UofGH as a transfer student. He explains that the transition was very smooth, thanks to the Business program Academic Advisor who provided support through the process.

Courses

Prince chose to emphasize his degree studies in management, which meant he took a lot of small business courses to learn about developing a business plan, analyzing a small business facing challenges and solving those challenges. Consulting with external organizations as part of his studies literally mimicked what he currently does every day as a professional consultant. A perfect example of where theory and hands-on learning come together.

But his studies also offered him the opportunity to diversify. He saw our dual degree and diploma program as a chance to differentiate himself and have more than just his finance background. He was looking to enter the management sector and wanted to understand how businesses work.

“[The program] allowed me to create that upper edge that no one, no other student, generally gets. I got more than I expected!”

Further studies

Prince is currently completing a Master of Economic Development and Innovation at the University of Waterloo. Expected completion is August 2023.

“I chose the University of Guelph-Humber because of the smaller class sizes. I was looking for a university where I wouldn't be another number. I wanted to network with the people around me and network with the professors. The University provided me that opportunity... It's a smaller community and you're going to love it here!”
