Alisha

Meet Alisha S.

Graduated 2017

“My biggest advice for a future student is to get involved. It really sets you apart, especially in business, and especially in accounting! During my time at UofGH, I was very involved on campus. I hosted events for students within the business community through many extracurricular roles.”

Where is Alisha now?

After graduation, Alisha went on to earn her Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in 2020. Currently, she is a Senior Auditor in the Office of the Auditor General of Ontario. She audits financial statements of the Province of Ontario, as well as the province's agencies and Crown corporations.

She is also teaching at the University. In fall 2022, she will be teaching Introduction to Financial Accounting.

“Since I really enjoyed my time at Guelph-Humber, I decided to come back and share my expertise with the next generation!”

Courses

Alisha explains... All the technical knowledge that I learned at Guelph-Humber came in handy as I was doing the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) exams and the process for CPA designation. My technical knowledge as well as my soft skills really allowed me to outperform my colleagues and shine as a CPA.

Clubs/Societies

Business case competitions

Alisha competed as part of Guelph-Humber's teams at provincial, national and international business case competitions (and travelled within Canada and the US).

A case competition is essentially a business simulation. Teams from various universities compete against each other. As a team or as an individual, you go through the background of a business, the problems that it's going through and you have to develop an opinion or recommendation for the business as a consultant/business leader/professional. You have two hours to read the case and then come up with a presentation to present to a panel of judges. The judges are usually from the industry; sometimes they're managers, senior managers or partners. You present your idea and your solution for the company - how to meet its objectives - as well as prosper with its goals.

“My favourite memory at the University of Guelph-Humber was when I was competing in a case competition in Vermont. I was with four students that were specializing in different fields of business. I was the finance rep. It was so beautiful to see all these different areas of business come together to solve business cases in front of a panel of judges while representing our school.”

Scholarships/Awards

“The success I achieved upon graduating from Guelph-Humber, would not have been possible without the continuous dedication and mentorship from the Business program professors. The professors ensured I had the technical and soft skills needed to obtain and succeed as a CPA.”
